Gang-gang Cockatoo: A Gentle Icon of Australia

The Gang-gang Cockatoo (Callocephalon fimbriatum) is one of Australia’s most distinctive parrots quiet, curious, and instantly recognizable by its soft crest and gentle demeanor.

Adult males are famous for their bright red head and crest, while females and juveniles are mostly gray with fine barring and a subtler crest. Their call often described as a creaky ‘door-hinge’ sound is where the name ‘Gang-gang’ comes from.

In the wild, Gang-gangs are typically found in cooler forests and woodlands of southeastern Australia, feeding on seeds, berries, and insects. Like many cockatoos, they rely on old trees with natural hollows for nesting so protecting mature habitat is critical for their long-term survival.
